Virtual Scope A New Human Interface for Real-time Display of High-definition CG Data Using Broadcast Technology

A new human interface called Virtual Scope has been developed enabling easy operation and display of high-quality computer graphics (CG) data corresponding to an actual picture or painting. The position of the interface operated by the user is detected by sensors and the CG data corresponding to the movement of the interface are displayed as a high-definition image using real-time CG technology for broadcasting. A prototype production system using this interface has also been developed and applied to the display of Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper. With this system, the user can manipulate the CG data for this painting without using traditional computer devices such as a mouse or keyboard. This is accomplished by placing a photograph panel of The Last Supper in front of the user and then having the user move a hand-held interface shaped like a magnifying glass in front of the panel. The user can enjoy CG data in this way without being conscious of the computer. This system was applied to a fine arts class and museum displays with good results. In this paper, we introduce this experimental system, describe operational tests, and touch upon future possibilities of this human interface.
